Ranked No. 10 of 100 · 1984 · Dargaud / Belgium

Political conspiracy, espionage, action thriller

An amnesiac marked with a number searches for a past others are ready to kill for.

Overview

The man called XIII wakes without his memory and follows fragments of evidence into a geopolitical conspiracy. Each answer opens another question about identity, loyalty and who controls the story of his life. Dargaud dates the series to 1984.

Why It Matters

The long serial uses amnesia as more than a hook. It lets the reader discover the political network at the same uncertain pace as the hero, making each revelation change earlier scenes.

Genre & Themes

Espionage, action and conspiracy thriller conventions overlap. The stakes expand from one person’s memory to institutions able to shape public events.

Art & Visual Identity

Vance’s realistic, highly legible pages make chases and clues easy to follow. Later artist Jigounov maintains a grounded visual approach as the series continues.
