Love and Rockets
Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez
Two brothers build separate, changing worlds under one comic’s title.
Overview
Love and Rockets gathers major bodies of work by Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez. Jaime follows Maggie, Hopey and their circle through friendships, romance and the punk milieu of Hoppers; Gilbert builds the community of Palomar and its connected lives.
A self-published issue appeared in 1981; Fantagraphics began publishing the series in 1982. The characters and their circumstances continue to change across stories.
Why It Matters
The series gives long-form comics the pleasures of watching people age, leave and return. Its two central strands differ in place and tone, yet both treat relationships as a source of continuing story.
Its large span also complicates any single genre label: romance, comedy, social realism and occasional fantastic elements coexist.
Genre & Themes
The genre is literary fiction with shifts into melodrama and the fantastic. The settings make community history visible through individual choices.
Readers learn a place by watching how its people remember, misread and care for one another.
Art & Visual Identity
Jaime’s clean, expressive figures and Gilbert’s bold character design create distinct visual voices. Both can move from humor to hurt through a small change in gesture.
The separate styles make the title’s shared form feel like a conversation between artists.
