Preacher
Written by Garth Ennis. Art by Steve Dillon.
A Texas preacher pursues an absent God through a violent, irreverent American landscape.
Overview
Jesse Custer acquires a supernatural power and sets out with Tulip and Cassidy to demand answers from God. Their journey crosses religious conspiracies, old wounds and grotesque enemies. The 1995 Vertigo series makes friendship and betrayal as consequential as its outrageous premise.
Why It Matters
Ennis uses provocation to test ideas about faith, authority and loyalty. The long journey gives the three central characters space to change, sometimes painfully, beyond the shock of individual episodes.
Genre & Themes
Supernatural horror, Western travel and dark comedy run together. The hunt for divine accountability makes the genre spectacle a vehicle for anger at institutions.
Art & Visual Identity
Dillon gives characters clear, often restrained expressions amid the excess. His readable staging keeps conversations and violent reversals equally sharp.
