Undercover crime / neo-noir

A returning outsider enters a reservation's casino politics and criminal underworld.

Overview

Dashiell Bad Horse returns to the Prairie Rose reservation after years away, finding a new casino and entrenched power struggles. His arrival draws him into a world of crime, family history and divided loyalties.

Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra launched the Vertigo series in 2007. Its long arc uses crime suspense to keep exposing old wounds beneath present conflicts.

Why It Matters

The series works as an extended noir narrative, with the protagonist's return making every alliance unstable. Its setting carries historical and political weight, and the story's depictions should be read as fiction rather than an account of all Native communities.

Genre & Themes

Neo-Western and crime thriller conventions shape the series. Corruption, identity and inherited violence remain central even when the plot moves at the speed of a police story.

Art & Visual Identity

Guéra's rough textures and heavy shadows give the locations a tense physical presence. Faces and body language frequently carry information that the dialogue withholds.
