Hard SF / Alien Archaeology

A weapons inspector investigates objects buried beneath the ice of Europa.

Overview

Warren Ellis and Chris Sprouse's Ocean began as a WildStorm miniseries in 2004. A research station orbiting Jupiter's moon Europa discovers ancient objects beneath its ocean, drawing UN inspector Nathan Kane to assess their danger.

The discovery attracts others with less cautious plans. Scientific curiosity, corporate interest, and weapons policy collide in an environment far from Earth.

Why It Matters

The comic frames first contact as a question of custody. Finding something ancient is easy compared with deciding who should control it.

Its procedural perspective gives the cosmic mystery a practical edge. Kane's role is to judge risk before anyone knows the full history of what lies below.

The Science Fiction

Europa's ocean is both a barrier and an archive. The ice hides objects that could change humanity's understanding of the solar system and its own future.

The story asks how institutions respond when an archaeological discovery may also be a weapon. Distance from Earth offers no immunity from familiar power struggles.

Art & Visual Identity

Sprouse's clean spacecraft and station layouts make the investigation legible. The contrast between cramped human infrastructure and the moon's hidden depths gives the mystery scale.

Precise technology and immense blank ice keep the unknown visually present even before its contents are revealed.
