Artificial Intelligence / Space Survival

A ship's artificial intelligence becomes caretaker to the children left aboard.

Overview

Jeff Lemire and Gabriel Hernández Walta created Sentient for TKO Studios in 2019. A separatist attack kills the adults on the colony ship U.S.S. Montgomery, leaving its children dependent on the onboard AI, Valarie.

Dangerous pursuers make survival an immediate problem. At the same time, Valarie must respond to needs that exceed a simple set of shipboard instructions.

Why It Matters

The book makes care, rather than conquest, the central test of an artificial intelligence. Its small surviving community gives an otherwise vast space setting an unusually close emotional scale.

It also changes a standard shipboard AI question. The issue is not whether the machine can imitate a person, but whether it can assume responsibility for people who cannot protect themselves.

The Science Fiction

A colony ship is normally a bridge between generations. Here that bridge is abruptly broken, and its automated systems become the only continuity the children have.

Valarie's decisions test the boundary between programmed function and judgment. The speculative premise is strongest when protection requires interpretation rather than routine operation.

Art & Visual Identity

Walta's controlled interiors make the ship feel like both home and fragile enclosure. The young survivors' scale against its machinery keeps their vulnerability in view.

The confined setting focuses attention on faces, corridors, and the interfaces through which Valarie can act. Space beyond the hull remains a threat felt through the ship's limited rooms.
