The Nice House on the Lake
Written by James Tynion IV. Art by Álvaro Martínez Bueno.
A perfect retreat becomes the setting for a terrible revelation about the world outside.
Overview
James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno began The Nice House on the Lake at DC Black Label in 2021. Walter invites a group of acquaintances to an isolated, beautiful house for what appears to be a reunion.
The guests know him in different ways and bring old tensions with them. Their relationships become crucial when the house's safety and Walter's intentions grow uncertain.
Why It Matters
The series makes apocalypse intimate. A small group with food and shelter still has to confront fear, resentment, and the strange terms of its survival.
Walter's carefully chosen guest list turns friendship into a question of power. Being saved can feel indistinguishable from being collected.
The Science Fiction
The secluded house functions as a controlled environment. Its comfort is unsettling because access to the world beyond it is mediated by someone else.
The speculative premise asks what consent means when the conditions of survival are hidden from the people affected.
Art & Visual Identity
Martínez Bueno renders the house as inviting enough to make its menace credible. Landscape and architecture promise freedom while quietly setting boundaries.
The contrast between lovely surroundings and escalating dread gives the series its distinctive visual tension.
