Upgrade Soul
Ezra Claytan Daniels
A couple seek renewal and meet versions of themselves they cannot simply call mistakes.
Overview
Ezra Claytan Daniels's Upgrade Soul follows Hank and Molly Nonnar, who undergo an experimental rejuvenation procedure for their forty-fifth anniversary. It produces disfigured but intellectually and physically enhanced duplicates. The two pairs must confront what it means for more than one version of a person to exist.
The work began in digital form before its 2018 print edition. This profile treats the complete graphic novel, while keeping its publication history distinct from the date of the collected book.
Why It Matters
The cloning premise is unusually intimate. It does not begin with an army or a laboratory escape; it begins with a long marriage and the wish for more time. The new bodies force each partner to examine what they value in themselves and each other.
The story's ethical questions remain uncomfortable because improvement is not presented as an easy gift. A duplicate may be more capable, but capability alone cannot decide who deserves a life.
The Science Fiction
The procedure separates identity from bodily continuity. Hank and Molly must face people who share their origins but are also distinct, making the familiar idea of a better self suddenly literal.
The technology turns aging and mortality into decisions with consequences for others. The question is not simply whether rejuvenation works; it is who bears the cost when it does not work as promised.
Art & Visual Identity
Daniels uses thin linework and unsettling bodily designs to keep both similarity and difference visible. The duplicates' forms make the experiment impossible to discuss as a purely abstract philosophical exercise.
The art can shift from tenderness to discomfort without changing its attention to faces. That range preserves the marriage at the story's center even when the premise becomes frightening.
